RETURN TO NATURE MOVEMENT IN PRE-NAZI BERLIN AND CONTEMPORARY DAYTON OHIO

It can be said that Berlin, just prior to the Nazi takeover was the high point of individual creativity and freedom in Civilization's ten thousand year history. The Nazi's destroyed these creative individuals, and cabarets, beginning in 1933. It could also be said that Berlin was the highest point of decadence that Civilization ever reached. Berlin, at that time, was the third largest city in the Western world. It had a population of 4,242,500, and was only surpassed by London and New York.

Dayton Ohio in 2005, at best, considering the greater area, had a population of less than a million. However, there are parallels with Dayton's Avant-garde Artists and the available entertainment in Berlin of the 1920's and 1930's. These parallels are the subject of this exploration.

NOTE: For the Dayton comparison stories first names only are used and these names are not real. This is to protect their identity. With well known performance artists the real names are used.

Chapter 1 - BACK TO NATURE MOVEMENT

BERLIN - In July of 1919, Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld opened the Institute of Sexology. It was a free school for sex activity and research, and sexual psychology. Hirschfeld is known for the originator of marriage counseling. There were museum exhibits, lectures and a large library. On May 6th of 1933 the Library of Sexual Science that contained 100,000 books and manuscripts were burned. Before 1933 the Institute provided lawyers to protect gay men from black-mail attempts. The Nazis tried to assassinate Hirschfeld in 1923 but he escaped and later fled Germany to live out the last few years of his life in exile.

DAYTON - In Dayton at the millennium change nudity was prevalent. Of course it was against the law but was still done in the name of art. Poetry Readings at Wright State University, Front Street Coffee House, Santa Clara Art Hops and Performance Art pieces in Leigh Waltz's studio in Miamisburg all had nude showings. Usually women's breast but some totally nude and occasionally a male. The films contained nudity of some sort. "Polly's Performance Art Show", as well as films by Rob Avery and David Rosenblum had nude scenes.

As the millennium ends, man has found himself at a threshold.

He has controlled and built and manipulated the world for 10,000 years.

He is about to realize that, at best, he is a very ugly god.

He is beginning to realize that he is, and has always been, a most beautiful animal.

He is about to give up his godly quest and is searching for that which makes him human.

I have found the beautiful animal. He is here in the forest, whether it be urban or primal. He is here in his nakedness.
