The Parable of the Bubble Gum Sniper and the Soldier in training

for the Retro Punk X Performance by Jack Bowman

FM 5-32 Department of the Army Field Manual (September 1965) BOOBYTRAPS mentions the mouse trap in paragraph 44 b 2, and paragraph 58 d. However it is the ultimate trap device. The Bubble Gum Sniper is a crossbow hunter and in the 1970's she created the mouse camera trap so she could watch deer trails when she wasn't there. It was made from a camera bought for one dollar at Good Will, an old paint brush handle, and a mouse trap.

The camera was frequently tested in an Industrial Arts class that she taught. It would be set up to catch students. Even though they were aware that it was around they still got caught. It was set in various places and many photographs were taken.

By the 1980's the Bubble Gum Sniper had a photography student that had seen all the photo's and the camera trap. The student had already enlisted in the Marines and had only two weeks of his senior year left. He said, as all the students thought and said, that She couldn't get him.

He knew that the trap worked best on the first student that entered the room so he changed his habits for the next two weeks and was frequently late or waited outside the door until another student came and he would then follow him in. He apparently had no qualms about sacrificing a fellow student.

The Bubble Gum Sniper Girl watched his habits and noted one in particular. He was an Advanced Student so he had his own drawer to hold his supplies. She placed an inconspicuous box with a hole the size of a lens near the drawer. She did not set it because she wanted to see if he noticed it. He didn't. So after about four days she set the trap. The key to getting him was changing the technology. He thought it had to be a thread. So she made a camera that was set off with a solenoid (she actually had made it earlier because she wanted one that could reset itself yet still survive the outdoors). She wired the back of the desk drawer and ran the wires through the back of the furniture. She put a roller switch in the back of the drawer where it could not be seen and put a note in the drawer. He was not prepared for the technology to change as we never are.

The note said "This is the most important lesson you will ever learn in High School. If someone wants to get you they can."

The picture was taken, he read his note and went off to the Marines.

Camera Trap that uses an (invisible) thread to cover a large area of perhaps ten or 15 feet. The thread was loose but was held up by the use of twigs stuck into the ground. A wood board was placed over the top of it to protect it from the rain.  It was set up for 14 days before the Deer at the right tripped it. It was very effective.

Camera with a solenoid attached that will release the shutter when the wires are connected by a contact switch. Batteries are required for this Camera.

The moral of the story is that people are actually good. If you do not aggress upon them they will let you live. However, if you do abuse them they will find the means to kill you. In this case they can kill you without their presence. They could actually kill you after they were dead because it is a booby-trap that no longer requires their presence once it is set. In fact there are even booby-traps that can be set to kill for years in the future. The ancient Chinese built crossbows with trap triggers in their tombs. The fact is simple; YOU ONLY LIVE BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE GOOD. THEY ARE NOT EVIL AS SOME OF THE CONTEMPORARY RELIGIONS SAY.
